NO GREATER JOY DANCING WITH A CHOPPING BOARD JANUARY 26, 2015-Harris UMC

No Greater Joy Dancing with a Chopping Board, the white Potato, the Cabbage, the Kitchen Knife and the Pots ====================== Amado I. Yoro It was 4:15 early Monday morning of January 26, 2015 I said to my wife who still in bed: I’ll go with Father Alex Vergara to town. I’ll be home by 10:00 am.”, then left the house. ================== Father Alex and I had agreed yesterday during our regular monthly of the Oahu Filipino Community Council [OFCC] to go to one of the churches in town to try explore for a possible expansion and to connect our ongoing OFCC Special Projects as our community outreach program as prescribed by the UFCH Resolution 2010-001. ==================== Father Alex is the OFCC president who is also involved in [I am beginning to learn now who he is the longer we work together] in many community outreach being a retired pastor; I am a OFCC past president [1982] now a vice chairman of the OFCC Council of Past Presidents [COPP]. I’ve been doing this feeding the homeless, the elderly, the nonparents children many years back since my arrival in July 1971 with the Lions Club, the Waipahu Business Association, our St. Paul’s Church Honolulu, the DWCLCAAH, others. I was certified as a Layman Ministry by the Member Mission Network, Inc. [New York based] as I attended seminars and stewardship training in this type of outreach in Santa Barbara California as provided by the Episcopal Asia Ministry and Church Development with the coordination of Rev. Wayne Schwab with the recommendation of Rev. Dr. Fred Vergara and Rev. Canon Randolph VN Albano. ================================= Taking the Bus is a regular thing I do whenever I go out. Since I got this benefit of Senior Bus Pass, most of the time I take advantage of the Public Utility Transportation: The BUS. ================================== I missed the Route E Bus due to the traffic signal that prevented me to run and ride. Bus runs according to set schedules. No park and wait for any passenger until the driver sees you through the side or back mirror that you are trying to catch it. ======================================= Fortunately, the BUS 91 came in just a few minutes around 4:45am. ================================== Bus 91 is much faster than the Route E and in about 5:20am, I got off the Bus at the corner of Bethel and King streets. It took me ten minutes to reach Harris United Methodist Church corner of Vineyard and Nuuanu streets. ================================= I went around the building and no one around. =========================================== I called Fr. Alex informing him that I am already in front of the gate. ================== I went to the parking lot and I saw an elderly woman just parked her car and getting out, I said good morning and introduced myself. I told the lady that I was invited by Fr. Vergara to come and volunteer here. ===================== Inside the kitchen, I was told to take out 4 big cooking pots out from the kitchen cabinet and I was told to put it in the big 4 burners stove. =========================== I asked them just show me a sample what to do by actual demonstration, I am a fast learner, then, things follow in good hands. ========================= There comes the white chopping board ontop of the stainless tables, the bucket of potato, the cabbage, the onion and the kitchen knife. ======================= Kimi showed me how to cut and how to shred, ============================== Then, that is fast and quick. ========================= Fr. Alex on the other side did most of the cooking, putting all the necessary ingredients to make the soup good and tasty. He did some stroke in stirring, mixing, and adding water . ===================== I have that their senior volunteer as Kimi Shigemura who worked here as a volunteer for more than 30 years. ====================== Other women like Helen, Norma and other 3 ladies are so welcoming and friendly. Environment like this with the elderly is not new to me anymore. I worked with people in all ages, I told them: don’t pay attention to your age, don’t count it; what is more important is what is your activity/ies is/are and what contribution to your group or community count. ;============================= Fr. Richard is also a retired pastor. But we both agreed: no retirement is applicable to serve in His Name.[the Lord] =========================== I introduced myself as a volunteer, a member of St. Paul’s Church-Honolulu. A Bishop’s Warden [President] for about 17 years and with the church about 35 years. A volunteer, community organizer with the Mission Day Service and the UFCH/OFCC Feeding the Homeless, the Adopt a Highway/Park; Hawaii Food Bank, others. ======================= One criticized me why I am doing this and not to find a paid parttime or full time job for my own table. ============================== Giving and sharing time, talent and sometimes treasure out from the pocket is for make me feel better than receiving from a payroll money. It is true, I need money as I am financially in need, but, the difference is the ‘divine’ giving and the receiving material things. ============================ Closing prayer by Fr. Alex Its 7 am ---what a wonderful morning in one hours sharing the time to prepare meals for those ‘brothers and sisters” destitute and no shelter. That early morning starts a good day of sharing my voluntary time, one of the THREE T’s in stewardship and serving the Lord in this way. ======================== THANKS GOD, YOU LET US DO THIS FOR THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN DESTITUTE, sleeping along the street, with cardboard and old old old blankets or what not-----for sharing is LOVE, for giving is passion and compassion-----let me do it again Lord, should ALLOW ME once or many many more times and in a million times......if you believe that is how do you want me to serve......for the community and in your name.=============================== That is Volunteerism as an act of giving time, talent and treasure, provide services without any expressed or implied promise of remuneration, but giving free time, at free will, for the benefit of others, Thanks God. You let me did it again ! ============================= No greater joy to serve; and no other consolation and reward but your continued blessings to my family, friends and the community in providing us the 10-H: health, happiness, harmony, helping hands, humility, hope healing, a ‘house’ as I call it HOME. ==================================== That HOME as an abode to dwell with my family: to pray, to eat food in our table, to laugh, to sing, to converse and communicate, to read and to learn everyday that make us stronger individual and to spend our life as a temporary basis- that there is a permanent place to rest eternally. “Ta idiay balay ni Ama adu ti pagyanan iti awan patinggana a biag” #####

28th Hawaii Legislature Opening Ceremonies January 21, 2015 Hawaii State CApitol

[From Amado’s Journal] Twenty Eigth Hawaii State Legislature Opening Ceremonies, Festivities and Refreshing Memories and Reconnected to old Acquaintances ================= Amado I. Yoro ==================== IT WAS January 21, 2015 Wednesday in Hawaii nei. The morning sun rises over the Punchbowl hills, a resting place of fallen veterans who defended our national security and peaceful country, Around ten o’clock, the Hawaiian ‘tambuli’ and the gavels of the both Chambers’ presiding officer was pounded against the respective podium for the official opening of the Twenty Eigth Hawaii State Legislature. The Senate Chamber and the House, both at first floor of the Hawaii State Capitol with some security officers, located at the corner of Beretania and Punchbowl and Richard Street just the opposite of the Washington Place, an official residence of the Hawaii Governor. ===================== As an inventory purposes, as a Filipino-American ancestry, how many in our own assuming if we can count as ours any spouse has a connection to us Filipinos, by marriage. ================== In the Hawaii Senate, there are six senators out of the 25 Senate members are representing our Filipino-American community. They are: ====================== Senator Donna Mercado Kim, president. A senator since 2000 is leading the Senate for her third year, 24 Democrats and 1 Republican. This position was held by Filipino former Senator Bobby Bunda [with root from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte] who ran for Lt. Governor but lost. He is now a member of the Honolulu Authority Rapid Transit [HART] who is responsible for the planning and construction of the debated project above the ground rail system from the Kapolei district to Ala Moana to UH-Manoa. ================= Historically true, Hawaii Senate has been the place where the First Filipino Senator elected in the person of Benjamin Menor. The late Senator Menor was from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte. He also became the First Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court, then followed by Justice Mario Ramil and Justice Simeon Acoba, both sons of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, and both retired. ================== House counterpart as a First Filipino Territorial Representative was the late Judge Peter Aduja from Vigan, Ilocos Sur as he served as Representative in 1954 before Hawaii below the 50th State in August 21, 1959. ========================= Younger Menor [Ron], a prominent lawyer also served both in the Hawaii Senate and the House of Representatives. He ran for US Congress but lost. He is now the member of the Honolulu City Council representing Waipahu, Ewa and part of Kapolei. ================== Senator Willie Espero, vice president, this position was held by Kim before the election of then Senate President Colleen Hanabusa to US Congress. Espero is a longtime lawmaker and community activist from neighborhood board, to House member and now a senator. Both Kim and Espero unsuccessfully ran for the US Congressional District 1; ================== Gilbert Keith Coloma Agaran, Chairman, Judiciary and Labor Committee. Former Director of Department of Labor & Industrial Relations, and Department of Natural Land Resources. His root according to him when I met him at the UFCH Convention in Molokai 2009 is Badoc-Pinili, Ilocos Norte. ======================== Donovan Dela Cruz, former Honolulu Council Chair before he ran for the Senate. Council Chair was held by another great Filipino lawmaker the late Honorable Rudy Pacarro. Dela Cruz’s grandparents were from Tarlac. ==================== Brickwood Galuteria, local born with Filipino roots. Lorraine Rodero Inouye, former Big island mayor. Her roots from Piddig, Ilocos Norte and La Union. ======================== In the House chamber, A Fifty One members State House of Representatives, they are six representatives considering Vice Speaker John Mizuno [as married to a Filipina community leader Joje May Mizuno, current president of the Congress of the Visayan Organizations [COVO] 1. Henry Aquino, son of Ilocos Sur 2. Della Au Belatti, roots from the Visayan Island 3. Romy Cachola---son of Ilocos Sur 4. John Mizuno married to Filipina 5. Ty T.K. Cullen 6. Joy San Buenaventura ===================== Inside the House Chamber I met Mr. Danny F. Agsalog, Budget and Finance Director under Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa. Danny as I intimately call him is my townmate from Sinait, Ilocos Sur, one of our outstanding Sinait Alumni; served as community relations under Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. He ran unsuccessfully against Representative Joe Souki, the House Speaker a difference of 200 plus votes. ===================== In the same chamber, I also met Atty. Donnie Juan, president of the FilComCenter, young and promising lawyer and served as legal counsel for the United Filipino Council of Hawaii during the time I was one of the Board of Governors 2009-2011. =================== Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Mark Recktenwald officiated the oath taking for all members of the House. ======================= Official part of the program is the singing of the National anthem, Hawaii Pono’i, the pledge of allegiance, invocation by The Very Reverend Walter B.A. Brownridge, Dean, Cathedral of St. Andrew, the entertainment with songs and beautiful Hawaii hulas. The Comedian Frank De Lima who wanted to become a priest but turned into comedian to make people laugh, now just made 65 years old, still can sing a funny song about the Filipino delicacies like the darangdarang, dinaraan, kalamunggay leaves and fruits, dog menu, pusit nga agpuspusitsit. And the 3000 plus pairs of shoes of the former first lady----and gave some punch lines that make people crack up in laughter. joke joke joke. ============================ At the House Chamber, Speaker of the House Joseph M. Souki called on members of the House of Representatives to focus on doing the “nitty-gritty” work that will allow government to function more efficiently and for Hawaii’s families to pursue their dreams. In house guests Speaker Souki recognized and acknowledged the following in the order of their year in office as a Governors and Commander in Chiefs in Hawaii with their spouses except one was unable to attend. ======================= Honorable George Ariyoshi and Mrs. Jean Ariyoshi[1974-1986]; Honorable John Waihee III and Mrs. Lynne Waihee[1986-1994]; Honorable Benjamin J. Cayetano and Mrs. Vicky Cayetano [1994-2002]; Honorable Neil Abercrombie [2010-2014]. Governors Ariyoshi, Waihee and Cayetano had completed eight years service as governor as provided by the Hawaii Constitution. ========================== Think about these first three former governors about my personal experience was great experience challenging, educational provided me an opportunity to develop and grow as a better person and community leader. ================================================== In 1982, Mr. Ariyoshi has appointed me as member of the State Board of Registration, Oahu, with other two members. Mr. Waihee was the Lt. Governor and the State Board of Registration is under the Office of the Lt. Governor. While in 2002, Mr. Cayetano was appointed me as one of the fifteen commissioners for the Filipino Centennial Celebration Commission [Act 159] 2002-2006 in the planning, preparation, implementing all programs relating to the One Hundred Years Anniversary Celebration of the FIRST FIFTEEN FILIPINOS arriving in the Honolulu Port via SS Doric on December 20, 1906. The whole year celebration was done in 2006. ========================================== We flocked where the same feathers are. At the 4th floor of the State Capitol where most of the 51 members of the House of Representatives is housed with their respective offices, in front of the office of Transportation Chairman Rep. Henry Aquino, son of Santa, Ilocos Sur, I joined Danny Villaruz, Ilocos Surian Assn of Hawaii, president; OFCC Council of Past Presidents Chairman, with him are former Rep. Ben Cabreros and OFCC Past President; OFCC Past President Jean Jeremiah and Council of past President Recorder; Edmund Aczon, Chairman of the Directors for FilComCenter and former Community Liaison officer for the former senator Daniel Inouye; Serafin Colmenares, Jr, Office of Language Access Executive Director and past commander of the Knights of Rizal Hawaii Chapter. ================================= Very timely as we have some conversation among our group, former US Congressman Ed Case joined us and took some pictures. Ed Case ran for US Senate but lost to Senator Daniel Akaka. He also ran for Governor but lost against Mazie Hirono, and Hirono lost against Linda Lingle. Ms Mazie Hirono now serving as junior US Senator for Hawaii in US Senate in Washington DC. With her now at the Capitol Hill is Senator Brian Schatz. Both senators had served as Lt. Governor in Hawaii before the moved to US Senate. Ms Hirono served under Governor Cayetano while Mr. Schatz served under Governor Abercrombie half term. ========================================================== We were one of the volunteers when Ed Case ran for Governor as well as for the US Senate by having a community group forum and coffee hours in my residence in the Historic Ewa Villages, that is how we became close each other as a friend. Ed Case was awarded as OUR FILIPINO FRIEND for the UFCH Progress Award. =========================================== Across the State Capitol at the corner of South King and Punchbowl streets, is the Honolulu Hale where other Filipino lawmakers serving for the Honolulu Council are Councilmembers Kimberly Marcos Pine, Ron Menor, Joey Manahan and Brandon Elefante. ========================================================================== Varities of foods were served in each lawmakers’ offices with their own delicacies, ethnic and international menu including Filipino like the kankanen, pancit, dudol and sushi, lumilumi, others. =============================================================== Part of the festivities, we hopped from one office to another like Rep. Romy M. Cachola, another son of Ilocos Sur. Rep. Cachola is Chairman, Veterans, Military, International Affairs, Culture and the Arts. Member: Judiciary, Consumer Protection, Tourism, Economic Development, Agriculture. He served as Honolulu Councilmember. ========================================================================== To the office of Vice Speaker John Mizuno who is very close to the Filipinos being married to a Filipina, Joje May Mizuno who currently president of the Congress of Visayans Organizations [COVO]. Mr, Mizuno still remember the days when he was a participant in the Adopt a Highway Clean Up Project that I chair under the Oahu Filipino Community Council until this time. The Adopt a Highway under the Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highway Division was used to be Weeful Project in which were got involved since the early 70’s. ================================================================== In Rep. Mizuno’s conference, turned into food tables, our fellow Filipino Community leaders are enjoying their foods in their plate. Very familiar face and former Rep. Felipe Abinsay, Jr., former Rep. Al Lardizabal, former Director of the Hawaii Personnel, and editor of the The Labor where we both write for the LIUNA Local 368 where I also worked as an Organizer and Business representative. Mr. Lardizabal is now a lobbyist for the United Public Workers [UPW] ========================================= Other leaders like Nancy Walch, Agnes Reyes, Ramon Sumibcay, Thelma Corpuz Zales, Thannie Agarpao, and Adela Salacup, except Agarpao and Sumibcay, these ladies are members and associated with the Filipino Business Women Association and the Hawaii Filipino Women Civic Club. Agarpao was a former president of the Sarrat Assn of Hawaii and Sumibcay is the president of the San Manuel Pangasinan Assn of Hawaii. ============================================== Jun, Jean and I went to ==================================== • Senate President Donna Mercado, senator since 2000 is leading the Senate for her third year, 24 Democrats and 1 Republican. We signed into her guest book. Greeted and congratulated her and best wishes. She offered something to eat and said: “Take some cancanen that my mother cooked” • House Speaker Joe Souki who is very welcoming as we approached him for a greetings and congratulate him for being elected as Speaker of House with fifty one members representing the whole Hawaii nei. Souki is back as House Speaker for his third year after serving speaker from 1993-1998. The House has 44 Democrats and 7 Republicans.======================================= • Rep. Ken Ito, Majority Whip, vice chairman, Veterans, Military, International Affairs, Culture and the Arts, and member in Education, Higher Education, Economic Development, Agriculture and Tourism. He was proud in showing us his Filipino barong tagalog as he is a member of the “Filipino Caucus in the Legislature” where former Rep. Abinsay was one of the organizers. • Rep. Calvin Say, Speaker Emeritus, member in Education, Energy and Environmental Protection, Higher Education, Ocean Marine Resources and Water and Land.================================== • Rep. Scott Saiki, Majority Leader, and member Legislative Management • Rep. Clift Tsuji, Chairman, Agriculture and member in Education, Higher Education, Economic Development, Veterans, Military, International Affairs, Tourism. His staffs include Filipinos. His friendship with former Rep Abinsay still good as Abinsay was the chair for the Agriculture committee co-chair and ‘Mr. Frog’ was his co-chair. ============================== • Senator Lorraine Rodero Inouye, Vice Chairwoman in Higher Education. Member: Ways and Means, Transportation and Hawaiian Affairs. She called me ‘Manong’ as we shook hand as I greeted her Madam Senator.====================================== • Senator Clarence Nishihara, Chairman, Transportation, Vice Chairman, Government Operations, member: Commerce and Consumer Protection, Education. Mr. Nishihara is a good friend for the Filipino Community, we both member in the Leeward Lions Club in the 80’s. He presented a Certificate of Appreciation to St. Paul’s Church, Honolulu in recognition of our church for being consistent in the cleaning Farrington Hwy, a 4-mile stretch. I was the Bishop’s Warden [President] of the church when Senator Nishihara presented the certificate with then Vice Speaker Jon Kurimatsu. Farrington Hwy is Nishihara senatorial district from the Leeward Community College Entrance to the Hale Koa Health Facility.================================== • Vice President Willie Espero, Chairman, Public Safety, Intergovernmental and Military Affairs.============================================ Each office we have visited has their own foods on the table and help yourself, feel at home and enjoy. ============================================ Not a surprised at all when I met Mr. Randy Iwase as he still recognized me and we greeted each other. He is just appointed by Governor David Ige to the Public Utilities Commission [PUC], a three member. Randy as I call him is very instrumental in making Kapolei a future ‘second city’ and the Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio by passing a bills into laws as he was a member of the Honolulu City Council. He served as the Chairman of the State Labor Relations Board, he served as senator, When he ran for City Mayor as well as for Governor, in some small ways, we helped him by way of ‘coffee hour’ in my house. Both of his campaign was unsuccessful. =============================================== But I am glad, people like Mr. Iwase can always keep the memories though part of seasoning ourselves, losing hairs or having additional legs, things in our mind still alive and vivid. ============================================================================ Same true with former Senator Norman Sakamoto, who greeted me and shook hand with me. Mr. Sakamoto used to be with us in the feeding the homeless in the past at the Institute for Human Services, as what former Rep. Jun Abinsay do until now. ========================================================================================= At the end of the day, outside, at the ground floor of the Capitol, groups of our Hawaiian-Polynesian brothers and sisters have poi making demonstration from taro crops while others have a quiet and peaceful rally by the FREE HAWAII group and other who want Hawaii Hawaii most particularly the type of environment and our organic foods natural as the heaven and nature bring not some type of artificial or free of chemical elements: with their big signs NO GMO, No Genetical Modified Organism by the ALOHA AINA [Respect the Earth]. ======================================================================== “Let the members of the both houses take care of these issues. This is one of the hardest issues to deal with” said Jun Abinsay as we were about to leave the building. “I wish them luck”. Abinsay was the former Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture when he retired from office. He was also served as Majority Floor Leader, Majority Whip, member in Health, Tourism, others.==================== He was the author of the bill HB 1942 relating to the creation of the Filipino Centennial Celebration Commission into law aka Act 159. giving the Governor Benjamin Cayetano to appoint a fifteen commissioners of Filipino ancestry to become a member:===== Elias Beniga, Chairman; ======Jake Manegdeg, Vice Chairman,===== Ben Saguibo, Finance Chairman; ===== Dr. Belinda Aquino, Chair, International Affairs; ======= Eddie Agas, Sr,. Thank you Jean for posting the Services for Larry Ramirez. I plan to attend both wake services in Mililani and Ewa Beach. Let us show our respect and appreciation to Larry and his family for the many years of community involvement that Larry and Connie selflessly shared with us through the years. Larry was a role model for doing his job without fanfare. He particularly did a lot of creative work in planning and implementation of stage decorations during community events; led in the creation and selection of Outstanding OFCC unit member organizations. An artist par excellence, he was a very humble man. We will miss him. There was a suggestion that we purchase a wreath as a token of our aloha. I believe Baybee made a motion for us to get one. Is there a second to the motion? Please respond to this email thread ASAP so that we can order for the wreath. Let us always remember Larry and Connie in our thoughts and prayers. FORTY TWO YEARS WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: PAIN, FRUSTRATION, JOY, LAUGHTER YET A SUCCESS AND ACHIEVEMENTI

Forty Two Years Wedding Anniversary: Pain, Frustration and Joy and Laughter Yet A Success and An Accomplishment========================= By Amado I. Yoro Jan 2, 2015 ======================== I can’t help but a bit emotional and surprised as I opened my Facebook this morning as I normally do now as part of my hobbies and pastime besides writing special journal and special activities as my first love is writing fiction, non fiction, poetry, feature stories, novel and novelette and other sort of literary genre. ========================= [Note: I don’t want fb before, not at all as people were saying is a waste of time. But I can’t help anymore that my apoko Cheryl Lee Yoro Rosete taught me how to do it in a simple basic way during my one month vacation in my hometown and birthplace Tapao, Sinait, Ilocos Sur in October November 2012 and part of my learning to be more familiar, a fb friend, a newly found townmate who now lives in Ortega, Naguilian, La Union, and a layout artist with Timpuyog Journal that I am a Hawaii Correspondent, so kindly enough to teach me over fb at her own time convenient] ======================================== As I opened my FB in my timeline, a letter written by Cheryl Lei Yoro Balcita, my one and only daughter I have with my wife Gloria. I have no idea how Lei gets these. With a fifteen seconds video taped seven selected photos. The 1st one is when Gloria newly arrived in Hawaii June 1973; 2nd is when we have a special dinner on Top of the Eye, the top most level of the Ala Moana Hotel as I was awarded “Achiever of the Year February 1980” by the Tri Media Council; the 3rd was taken in the Big Island or Hawaii Grande; 4th was taken at the Sea Life Park, one of the tourist spots in Oahu, at the altar in our 40th anniversary, and last was taken in front of our porch for the 42nd anniversary. ========================================== The letter goes like this: “January 2, 2015. Today, Friday my parents celebrate 42 years of marriage. If you know them, you know that there has rarely been two people more well-suited for one another. God truly created them as a team. They are better together. My parents provide a wonderful example for me personally when it comes to marriage. I’ve learned from them what a beautiful, Godly marriage between two best friends can look like. They are an inspiration to me! ============================== Honestly, marriage is hard. There are days when you have to call back to the commitments you made at the height of romantic feelings, and be loyal to them even in the depths of anger or frustration. Some days feel wonderful, and some days feel, not so wonderful. But through it all, if you’re willing to put in the work, marriage can also be the most amazing relational experience on this side of eternity. ============================ When two lives become one, something so incredible happens: God makes you stronger because of your spouse and vice versa. ============================ Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! Your love is amazing! ======================================= Greetings from relatives, friends, fellow community leaders followed: Like Yvonne Yoro: Happy Anniversary Auntie and Uncle ====================== Thank you Yvonne Yoro, its a 42 years in our journey----we are looking forward for the Golden and Diamond-----hoping God or Almighty Father Will Give us that precious gift in our lives.======================== Venus Mangrubang said Happy Anniversary Manong and Manang. God Bless you both. • ========================= Thank you, thank you Venus Mangrubang-----Thanks God, we made it for another year===================== And from a close friend, one time legal consultant and OFCC Council legal adviser for many years, who also brought me in into St. Paul’s Church as he was Bishop’s Warden [President] and I was a Chair for the 30th Anniversary, 1989, and Junior Warden [VP] 1990, when he left, then I became BW for 16 years, the longest ever serving BW appointed by three Bishops Donald Hart, Richard Chang and Robert Fitzpartrick [1991-2007] [good morning myself] I am referring to==================== Atty Alfredo G. Evangelista. Thank you Attorney, yes, it is hard to believe how fast, how hard to work on and live in 366 days each year. With pain, with ups/down, with laughter and with prayers, thanks God----we made it 42 with same Gloria with 2 wonderful grandchildren: CJ Boy and Princess Lia and one loving daughter: Cheryl Lei========================= Thank you Davelyn Quijano. Yeah ! I won a GRAND PRIZE today----that brings me back that typical day on January 2, 1973 in Manila as Rev Alberto Layson officiated the simple matrimony in a sacred sacramental vow---and the simple luncheon at the Aristocrat restaurant along Roxas Boulevard with our 2 SPONSORS: my travel agent Remy Aldanese and Mario Galang, taxi driver first and last time meeting with him as we hired him as part of the ala-Las Vegas wedding: quick and swift, before we proceeded to Sinait-----hahaha----But still it is small world, somebody still found us and gave me a surprised visit. ============================ Then comes Bert Ugalino’s greeting: Happy anniversary, kumadre and kumpadre. Bert is considered the “Father of Mrs. Hawaii Filipina” UFCH, for the Scholarship Program for hundreds of awarded recipients. As he said to: Kompadre, I found ways to fund the project, I certainly need your help, lets look for a good candidate/s to make the program work with a safe and solvent funds.” I added: I am for it, joint pockets: husband and wife financial support” That was 1997-1988 when Bert was the UFCH president and until this, the Mrs. Hawaii Filipina is on alive. Bert and his wife Irene are now in Magsingal enjoying raising pigs, chickens, bisukol, vegetables, mushrooms and all edible foods in their farms. ================================= And • Nancy Walch says: Happy Anniversary Amado Yoro and Cheers to the 42 Years of Love, Joy, Pain, Success, Failures, Happiness, Sorrow, Wealth, Health, Sickness, etc.- all of which constitute a true loving and strong marital relationship and the two of you are one of the living proofs. So, Congratulations and here is to the next 42 years of Marriage Bliss! Happy New Year! ====================================== • Happy New Year Nancy Walch and your loving half Gerhart, thank you for the greetings------Yes, I believe we've found some right FORMULA, the right CHEMISTRY , Techniques and style of Real Marriage---though we still looking for a better one, should there be others somewhere sometimes---What I can say and let me add also what were mentioned above: pasidumri, lua, katawa, prescription bills, utility bills, grace periods, deadlines, what to give to church, to community, to mission, to fundraisings, to scholarship, prizes to literary contests, drama, cultural, installations, conventions, conferences, others--------live with those things are considered happy life - agbayag ken agbiagka a naragsak---- And comes Dr. Aurelio Solver Agcaoili, versatile, writer, author and Carlos Palanca Awardee, a left handed writer: Congratulations and may you have many many more anniversaries. Thank you Dr. Ariel, wen, dayta metten ti kawasnay ti panagitured ti dapantayo a nagna iti "tuok, rigat, gin-awa- after the I do, so help me God" bareng no maisurottayo pay iti baro a bersion ti Agbiag iti ‘agbayag’ a naparnuay idi christmas party ti Ilocos Surian Assn Dec 13 idiay Neal Blaisdell Park. AGBAYAG [stay up longer and more power] ================================== Then Helen Santos Padua, writes: I think that pretty lady is the love of your life. Congratulations to both of you. Bring her back home for vacation. We missed her so much. ================================ Kunak met: intinnag ti langit kunadansa itay, imagine: I was an open book to her life and I was at DWCL from college fraternity, as a member and officer of the Beta Sigma Upsilon Fraternity then master of initiation to induction way back in 1968, she became my guest though she was from NWC, then I left for Hawaii in July 1971------more than 5000 miles away and I have China Airlines to bring me home to Manila for Christmas 1972--------On January 2, 1973 we got married in Manila--------And on June 30, 1973, she joined me in Hawaii, live together in a 9x12 feet rental room------Early 1978, we bought a 4 bedrooms house in our own, then sold after 3 years, bought another one 5 bedrooms up and down-------but we ended up to this old sugar plantation house used to be 3 bedrooms but I put additional 2 to make it 5 where 9 of us in this house now with 2 grandkids, what a story, this 42 years gave unfold. ============================ More greetings from well wishers from other places, friends, relatives, fellow writers follow, by telephone, by fb: Angie Santiago, Eddie Agas, Sr, Perlita Yoro Fernandez, Andel Barroga, Eduardo Padaoan, Ernie Pascua, Paul Cortes, Jeffrey de Mesa, Romulo Basuel, Maria Teresa Benas, Ely Raquel, and others. =========================== Kastoy manen ti inusratna iti maika-41st wedding anniversarymi. January 2, 2014 =============================== Dear Mom & Dad, ============= Thank you for showing me what a MARRIAGE is. Thank you for keeping it real, keeping your vows, and keeping our family together. After so many years, it’s natural to assume that couples just kind of fall into the same patterns of their lives or simply ignore the issues that come up. But that’s not you.==================== You guys work (hard) at it every single day. I’ve seen the growth in the relationship you have with each other. I appreciate the effort you put into your marriage…to our family. ======================= I admire you for that. I respect you for that. I thank you for that. ============================ I’ve been incredibly blessed to have a mom and dad who have stayed together for so long. Many relationships don’t work out, so growing up with parents who have such a loving and devoted union of life is a blessing. Your constancy has always been there for me to rely on. Your love has always been an example for me. By working to overcome the struggles that all couples have, you not only made each other happy, but created a healthy environment for me to grow into the person I am today. ================= Thank you, Mom and Dad. You have given me an amazing example to follow. You two are true partners and I’m grateful and so blessed to have witnessed 33 of the last 41 years of your life together. I love you both so very much. You guys are the best. ===================== Thank you for everything! Happy 41st Anniversary! ==================== Your daughter, Cheryl Lei — ======================== Thank you, Lei. I appreciate your letter to me and Mom. I can't hold my tears rolling down to my cheeks as I am reading your letter, balasangko, Yes, we tried to hold the rope to the end. This is our 41st wedding anniversary as we had a very simple wedding on Jan 2, 1973 in Manila with only 2 souls who witnessed that brief, instant wedding before we go to Sinait for reason.============================ This bring me back 41 years back in Manila as we celebrated this wedding at the Aristocrat Restaurant at the Roxas Blvd nearby the US Embassy. Only my travel agent and the taxi driver were witnessed and had lunch with us. The taxi driver was a first time I met for the first and last time after the lunch and after he dropped us at the Hotel Aurelio where I was housed, and where you Mom met me as I arrived at the hotel before New Year 1973. [Before I arrived in Manila via China Airlines, I had a stop over in Tokyo, Japan, and had a slept over at the Mandarin Hotel, Taipei]============================= ---------I admit, this marriage is NOT PERFECT. We have ups and downs----but we survived by the graces of our good Almighty God. God is good. Though we have tested how strong this marriage is- with trials, tribulations, still we both built a foundation. BEST CHEMISTRY I DISCOVERED, and still searching for the best element, I believe LOVE, UNDERSTANDING, forget-forgive, not fault finding, communication [bed talk especially] strong bond and in prayer, and going and get active role in church,-----not to argue nor fight in money, good and mutual understanding--------If this marriage can serve as a 'model', I thank you for that. We do not expect you to follow everything, but if there is something you can emulate - I thank you. If this could be my legacy, I thank you for that------Golden anniversary will be Jan 2, 2023, only God can bring that SPECIAL DAY for us. and and beyond-----only God holds that fate and destiny for us. Take care, balasangko. Take care your family. Take care Jun, CJ and Lia----Be humble, be sport, be respectful and be courteous and most importantly: be always honest, kind at kind and generous for sharing what you have---Have a Blessed 2014 and beyond. God Bless, Good health and good luck !!!!!!!!!! ==================== What a wonderful feeling came to me this very day, and I consider it a “new beginning: new life, new opportunity, new challenges and the extension of the ‘journey iti pannakigasanggasat nga agbiag’ until the very moment in reaching the ‘dead end’ when time comes for going back home. “For dust thou art, and unto dust shall thou return” Genesis 3:19. And when I say emotional and surprised, the way my daughter wrote her letter above, and now in turn, to response in a fatherly, friendly and my simplest I can. =========================== I want her to know that trophies, certificates of recognitions and awards never replaced her place in my heart, my soul and my life. Modesty aside, my nature is a tagnawa type of person I am. My first love is writing, and I am a volunteer, an organizer and coordinator by training. The Laymens Missionary and Stewardship and Leadership Training in the Mission Ministry Network. Rapid Response Team and Workforce Development background. The roar of members in the Lions Club International, taming the untamed, feed the unfed, serving the elders and the unparents children. •========================== And this is what I wrote: Thank you so much Cheryl Lei Campos Paguirigan Yoro Balcita, thank you if you and Jun will consider my marriage with your mom to be your role model and emulate-----of course you know us well—I love my roots, I love my culture, I love our heritage and the moral, spiritual sanctity of a matrimonial vow. We have lived and still living under one roof of 5 rooms; spent 34 thanksgiving days, 34 christmases and yesterday 34 new years ----======================---,after we moved here from Aiea, to Waipahu, to Ewa------Though, I did not promise your mom a paradise as Mark Twain describe, but I personally found a ‘paradise’ as I worked so hard and deligently earned a living from the sugar plantation for a two dollars an hour under the rain, under a sunny days and dusty field as we plant, as we replant sugar seedlings. When we spray, cut weeds and other manual work just to earn that dollar for our daily needs in our living as an ordinary immigrant. •======================== • And from the rank of more than 600 employees, I did not loss hope climbing a higher ladder in management level of responsibilities and played a Housing and Safety Coordinator [middle management role], then I found a ‘paradise’ in this little corner of this two busy streets as part of my bi-monthly salary working under one of the Big Fives: AMFAC/Oahu Sugar Company, that to me a paradise found. •============================== • This house is where you were born-----grew up, taught at home and grade school to college to work---I recognized and acknowledged the culture of the two different countries but still the same sun, moon, stars except in different times----in two different hemisphere and because of the International Dateline that makes it different-----but my blood as a Filipino, an ordinary son of a farmer, ordinary farmer and a grandson of a sacada 1926 is always in my veins-------I understand the difference of a culture in two nations-------the east and west------marriage here is way way difference: divorce, same sex marriage----is a law-----while the Philippines where I born and got married is still the country where old Chinese, Malayans and Spanish traditions and heritage have been planted and rooted thus the preservation of the traditional marriage between man and woman is very much alive. Here in America, particularly in the Aloha State----the Melting Pot of the Pacific that sometimes Andrew Lind called it a Crossroad of the Pacific because of mixture of different nationalities and ethnic background.------you have your own freedom. •======================= Things move fast as we live in this temporal world---we still the "Kartapilus nga Ilokano" [Jews the Wanderer] moving around just like a stranger dagiti 'makidagdagus' – [looking for a room in the inn] ken mangbirbirok [seeking their identity] if who we are. We are not literally a wanderer the sense and the facts that we dwell under a roof: we pray, eat, rest, enjoy the goodness of being well housed under a roof, a house. We are not NPA- no permanent address---we still more fortunate than those sleep under a small tents along the street, I can share the unfortunate situation of those destitute and the homeless. My heart and soul is with these brothers and sisters and that is why I am so much involved in my Mission Day Ministry each month with the different civic organization such as the UFCH, OFCC. Sinait and Ilocos Surian and others. •================================ • Yes, we still have a long journey to walk. Walk, yes, walk with that brown legs with a positive outlook: let us do the best now because I believe there will no no second chance---Thank you to Jun as well, I hope he finds himself living in a family as we have: simple, ordinary and rural type family, and I hope he enjoys living in this environment with Lia and CJ and all variety of voices, sounds, barking dogs, crows of the morning rosters, cranking engines of different models and makes, burning tires and various living things surround us. • =====================Lets live and share what we can, live what you can do the best for others as you can----share, volunteer, any community service work, serve others, pray, ask, act and do a simple living-----have that faith in you, be strong, be positive, humble, be safe and cautious, seek God's Guidance, for wisdom, for health, for harmony, for friendship, for everything under heaven that make you, your children a good persons: respected, courteous and honorable ------Observe and follow the Golden Rule and the rules of Moses written in stone at the Mt. Sinai: The Ten Commandments. • ==================In time in survival, always remember while swimming in the deep sea, the nostrils above the sea water level is best to survive, know how to kick your legs and crawl your hands as you are swimming and seek for any floating materials and items for a rest, and in the desserts or forest, learn to eat anything to make your stomach filled and drink anything that make your thirst quenched. • ================----Yes, your mom and I look forward as we move on: plan for family reunion in my birthplace in our home town, join Ilocos Surian Medical Mission/Sinait Medical Mission and Homecoming---Alumni reunion----in God’s Help and Power, nothing is impossible. Your mom is looking for another pilgrimage to Europe and/or back to the Holy Land to climb the Mt. Sinai for the second chance, and to be soaked again in the River of Life,-the Jordan River and to ride in a back of the camel. •============================= • Last Word: don't expect for perfection. Don’t be boxed in an ‘idea’ alone and stacked in there, dreaming is good, believing is good, but, just do simple and honorable thing, action, deed, make things happen, rather than do nothing. • And remember, we were born human. Lets live our lives in our faith and to be much stronger, wiser and with our lessons learned.####
